چکیده

Introduction: On 7 August 1976 the Viking 2 lander touched down at Utopia Planitia, Mars. Both Viking lander’s primary aim was to look for the presence of organic life on the surface of Mars. The lander also had a comprehensive meteorological package to monitor the martian conditions. The meteorological package included pressure, temperature, and wind sensors, enabling the landers to perform the first detailed in-situ investigation of martian weather. Dust devil tracks were first detected from orbit by Mariner 9, but it wasn’t until Viking that orbital photographs of columnar clouds/dust devils were taken. Possible dust devils/convective vortices were also detected by the Landers meteorological instruments.

Viking Lander 1 and 2 Revisited: the Characterisation and Detection of Martian Dust Devils

Introduction: During the summer of 1976 Viking Lander 1 and 2 touched down at Chryse Planitia and Utopia Planitia, Mars respectively. The primary aim of both Viking Landers was to look for the presence of organic life on the surface of Mars, however each Lander also had a comprehensive meteorological package to monitor the martian atmospheric conditions [1]. The meteorological package consisted...

Thirty Years After: The Science of the Viking Program and the Discovery of a “New Mars”

On June 19, 1976, the Viking 1 Orbiter achieved orbital insertion around Mars. On July 20, the Viking 1 Lander soft-landed on the surface of Mars in the Chryse Planitia (22 degrees north, 48 degrees west) becoming the first human-made object to land on Mars. The Viking 2 Orbiter achieved Mars orbital insertion on August 7. On September 3, the Viking 2 soft-landed in Utopia Planitia (44 degrees ...

Where is Viking Lander 2? Recovered Landing Site in MRO Images Not in Agreement with Earlier Predictions!

Introduction: Landers on the surface of Mars constitute unique landmarks for geodetic control point networks. Typically, their positions with respect to prominent surrounding surface features and their Mars-fixed coordinates, derived from radio tracking, are well established. Unfortunately, Viking 2 landed in a vast desert, which lacked prominent surface markings in its neighborhood. Hence, tho...

Observing desert dust devils with a pressure logger

A commercial pressure logger has been adapted for long-term field use. Its flash memory affords the large data volume to allow months of pressure measurements to be acquired at the rapid cadence (> 1 Hz) required to detect dust devils, small dust-laden convective vortices observed in arid regions. The power consumption of the unit is studied and battery and solar/battery options evaluated for l...
